Trail Mix Truth

scripturetrailmix1

Sadly, all too often this collection of Precious Words is treated as a bag of trail mix, of sorts…
… picking out the ‘favorites’, what ‘tastes’ good, has a pleasant ‘aroma’, or the ones that we grew up with or the ones that we think or have been taught are ‘relevant’ this ‘day and age’… taking the familiar, liked, or taught pieces and leaving the rest in the bag… because they just really aren’t for us. … maybe our forefathers … but not us.

When will we learn? When will we realize?
… after He has said, many times…
His Word… His whole counsel… His Instructions… are FOREVER…
His Word is not as a bag of trail mix, to pick and choose…
it is all relevant… it still applies… It stands FOREVER.
It is not “done away with”… it is not for only “those people”… It is for His children…
His children that love Him, believe Him and desire to be Set-Apart for Him.

It’s not supposed to be a “pick-and-choose” relationship.
It’s not a Trail Mix Truth.

Selah.

The Priestly Blessing – A Guide for Parenting

aaronicblessing1

Today I was so blessed by the following video teachings, taking us through the Aaronic Blessing found in Scripture and making it so applicable to our role as parents.

It was beautiful to tears.

Father’s Word is so deep. So much deeper than we can imagine.

May we continually search and dig for the Treasure within.

He HAS given us a parenting manual.

The Aaronic Blessing – a guide for parenting

—  multiply – increase our children – to show compassion – to build them up – their physical, emotional, intellectual strength — to safeguard – keep -protect them – as in the womb —
to show them unconditional love and grace, as we have invested in our children —
equal love, reconciliation and peace.

Bless yourself. Bless your children. Bless your family. Bless others. Bless your Creator.

Watch here: Part 1 and Part 2

They aren’t too long. Only about 10 minutes each.
Parenting is the most important job in the world.
May we take the time to continue to learn and grow.

— “Consider blessing your children each week with the Priestly Blessing.
When you do, consider what type of love each child needs most.

Does he/she need compassion right now? Unconditional love?
Or, perhaps, does he/she need to be looked in the eye and be reminded
that regardless of what choices you’ve made, I still love you?

A Little Encouragement in the Homeschool Department… and Child Directed Learning

I came across the following article/interview today that gained a little headline attention. It is about a homeschooling family of 12.

The headline? How We Got Our Kids in College By Age 12

To some, this may seem very impressive. To others, a little ridiculous.

Of course, keep in mind that not all college learning has to take place in an actual college building.

Regardless of whether one agrees a child should learn at a college level at that young of an age is not the focus of my posting this.  I was a public school kid and due to the program I was in and my test scores (don’t get me started on test scores, though), I had the opportunity to take college classes at ages 10 and 13. I didn’t, though… and I’m okay with that. Personally, I have mixed emotions regarding it and believe that a topic of this sort (as with most topics) cannot be judged at ‘face value’. It really depends on the individual child and family, circumstances, details and, of course, many other variables.

However, one of the topics I did like about the article was the one of child directed learning. This is one of the ways that we have (and do) approach our homeschooling. For us, this simply means allowing (and encouraging) our children to pursue their interests at various levels and through various resources.

I’m a believer that each individual is called to a different journey in life. I believe we all share the same foundational purpose – to bring our Creator honor and glory, to bring what we can of His Kingdom to Earth, to love our Creator with all of our heart, being and might, and to love our neighbors as ourselves. Yet, with that shared purpose, each individual has a more specific calling that they may bring Light and good and Truth in. And that each person has different interests – and this purpose, their calling – is one of those reasons we have such interests. (for the record… yes, I do believe external things can influence our interests, but I’m keeping this idea/post simple)

A child, a teen, an adult… should be encouraged to pursue what interests them. Of course we do not throw learning fractions to the curb (sorry, kids) but one should have ample freedom, encouragement and resources to pursue what interests them. And there are even ways (many times) to incorporate those “core subjects” with what interests that person.

That being said, here are some ‘pointers’ the above mentioned family shared:

Always ask your child questions. The answers will allow you to see what they are truly passionate about – and can help show you their future paths. As parents we tend to think we know what is best for our children, and in many ways, we do. However, we don’t always know how our children’s talents may translate in terms of a career. You might think they are only wasting time on a video game or the latest fashion trends. But looking further into these expressions of interest may just reveal a deeper meaning: What if your child is the designer of the next Donkey Kong? What if he or she is the next Coco Chanel or Ralph Lauren?

The problem is, most parents and teachers don’t address what a child wants to be when they grow up because there is a lot that has to occur between now and the time we get there. Moreover, you don’t want to put stress on children, making them think they have to get through all these hurdles to reach their final objective in one day. The trick is to tap into what inspires them so you know what will keep their interest. It’s kind of like a game; by discovering their core interest and focusing everything toward that, they grow amazingly fast.

Be patient. If your child is a gamer and just wants to play online for hours on end, try to play with them. Except you’re not mindless players — quite the opposite. You can ask your child provocative questions like, “How do you think the programmers created those graphics?” Pick up some magazines on the subject and let them read about it to increase their English skills, and perhaps even build some software programming skills. All of this takes extreme patience, which is something many parents have in short supply.

When properly equipped and inspired, a child will soon outdo his or her parents. That has been one of the most rewarding parts of our experience. Children can become “experts” in their own fields. Little Johnny may be able to tell friends and family all about insects, even though Mom has to force herself to smile at his latest capture. The point here is that Mom does not have to teach Little Johnny about the insect world or even like the insects. She only has to be willing to teach him how to do the research and how to write about those bugs. When researching, she should never say, “You can’t check out that book, because it’s above your grade level.” It may be above Mom’s grade level! But if she lets him check it out and learn something new, Little Johnny can explain the concepts to her in no time.

Give control to the kids. It may be scary at first, but when you see your kids beginning to read all the books they can find on their favorite topic, trust that there is real learning taking place. Reading is the most important first step and should be taught to children as soon as possible, followed by math and the rest as they mature. But if kids love reading, they will always be learning.

If you throw in intense family discussions, experiments, group projects, lots of family/homeschool group field trips, some sports, church, socializing as a family with people of all ages and cultures, and, of course, love, you will end up with a well-adjusted kid who is definitely ready for a college class or two.

Why I Don’t Celebrate Easter (and still love God… and still believe in the death, burial, and resurrection of Messiah)

It’s true… I don’t celebrate Easter.
And, yep – I still love and serve my Creator…
Oh… And I still believe in the death, burial and resurrection of the Messiah.

It has nothing to do with an aversion to celebrations, worship, food, fellowship…
or even chocolate…
but it has everything to do with Who I worship and what He desires.
Here are some of the reasons why I no longer celebrate Easter.

– Reason #1: The origins of Easter
Often, talking about the origins of anything can be a very touchy subject …
but it is one that should not be so easily avoided, ignored, rationalized or even spiritualized…
particularly, when it pertains to worshiping and having a relationship with The One True God.

Once upon a time, Easter was adamantly NOT observed by Believers.
In fact, Easter was observed looooong before Messiah even came to Earth…
and it wasn’t by Believers.

I won’t go into detail here as, if one puts forth even a little effort and time, one can discover (and, likely, be blown away, by the historical facts regarding) where this holiday originated from, what it represents, what its symbols and traditions represent and why Believers even started observing it as the celebration of the ‘Risen Savior’.
(keywords: origins of Easter, Ishtar, Eostre, Tammuz, Constantine, the Council of Nicea [325 A.D.])

Reason #2: Easter is NOT actually about the death, burial and resurrection of the Messiah
– It just isn’t… BUT… There IS a day/season that acknowledges and honors those events! 🙂
They are called Passover, The Feast of Unleavened Bread and the Firstfruits offering.
These are Events/Observances set apart by the Creator Himself to recognize these foreshadows/occurrences. Messiah was/is our Passover, not our Easter.
For also Messiah our Passover was offered for us.” – 1 Corinthians 5:7b
(See also: John 1:29; 19:14; I Corinthians 15:20, 23; 1 Peter 1:19; Revelation 5:6, 12, etc…)

Reason #3: The Apostles, 1st Century Church, and Messiah did NOT observe Easter
It’s true… they didn’t… BUT they DID keep and teach others to keep the Biblical Feast Days which where and are a true representation and foreshadow of things that happened and that were and are to come, and were instructed by the Father.
So then let us observe the festival, not with old leaven, nor with the leaven of evil and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.” – 1 Corinthians 5:8
(See also: Acts 2:1; 18:21; 20:6, 16; 1 Corinthians 5:7-8; 1 Corinthians 15:20-23; Luke 2:41; Mark 16:6, 12; etc…)

Reason #4: Because of What we are Instructed TO do…
We have been lovingly instructed by the Creator Himself to observe the Appointed Times of the Scriptures that He put forth– which are filled with rich, beautiful meaning and foreshadows… and they are celebrations and observances that set His people apart from the rest of the world… that we may be a Light to the nations.
These remembrances and rehearsals were instituted and blessed by YHVH (the LORD) Himself and are for ALL of Israel (Israel = His set-apart people that Believe and are in Covenant with Him. All 12 tribes, including the scattered).
Speak to the children of Yisra’ĕl, and say to them, ‘The appointed times of YHVH, which you are to proclaim as set-apart gatherings, My appointed times, are these:” – Leviticus 23:2
(See also: Lev. 23; Ex. 12:14,17,24; 13:6; Deut. 16; etc…)

Our Father has His own very specific set-apart days (His Feasts/Appointed Times) which are WAY more awesome to celebrate/observe, as they are filled with such deep meaning meaning and insight into the heart of our God.

Reason #5: Because of What we are Instructed NOT to do…
We have, actually, been instructed to NOT learn the ways of other nations (people groups/religions) and NOT to worship our God as they worship theirs.
When you come into the land which YHVH your Elohim is giving you, do not learn to do according to the abominations of those gentiles (nations; people). ” – Deuteronomy 18:9
(See also: Leviticus 18:3-5; 20:22-23; Jeremiah 10:2; I kings 11:33; Deuteronomy 5:32; 11:16; 28:14)

Reason #6: ‘What it means to me’ doesn’t matter
That’s not what it means to me”. – I hear that said often.
In fact, I used to say it often, too.
But the simple truth of the matter is … if I actually love my Creator and have a heart and resolve to serve and honor Him, then “That’s not what it means to me” DOES NOT MATTER. (not yelling, just emphasizing)
The only thing that matter is: WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO HIM?
What an awesome question!

May goal is to continually seek Truth… to continually check my belief system, and making sure it lines up with the instructions He has left for me that I find in the Written Word… so that I may worship Him in spirit AND in Truth… not one or the other… but both.
I desire to seek to really understand WHY we do the things we do. And WHY we believe what we believe. I do not want to just blindly worship a certain way because we have inherited those ways… because that’s just what we do… or because that’s what Dr., Mr. Brother, Sister, so-and-so says we’re supposed to do.
It doesn’t matter how sincere we are. We can be sincerely wrong.
I want my sincerity to line up with truth and obedience.
How about you?

It does not matter what it means to us.
It only matters what it means to HIM.
He doesn’t want us to worship Him OUR way.
He wants to be worshiped HIS way…
After creating us and all of the many things He has done and Who He is, I think that is a very reasonable service.

When YHVH (the LORD) your Elohim does cut off from before you the nations which you go to dispossess, and you dispossess them and dwell in their land, guard yourself that you are not ensnared to follow them, after they are destroyed from before you, and that you do not inquire about their mighty ones, saying, ‘How did these nations serve their mighty ones? And let me do so too.’ Do not do so to YHVH (the LORD) your Elohim, for every abomination which YHVH hates they have done to their mighty ones, for they even burn their sons and daughters in the fire to their mighty ones.” – Deuteronomy 12:29-31

And in vain do they worship Me, teaching as teachings the commands of men. Forsaking the command of Elohim (God), you hold fast the tradition of men.” – Mark 7:7-8

What a joy it would be if we united together to worship our Creator the way HE desires (and instructs) to be worshiped!
Actually… That Day WILL happen…
when King Moschiach comes and establishes The Kingdom. HalleluYah!

BUT… Why wait for that Day to learn? Why wait to worship Him and observe what pleases (and reveals SO much of) Him? We can learn now! And be blessed!

May we always seek Truth. And may we be courageous and walk in It.

Loving Him… Enough to obey. Enough to honor. Enough to identify.
Enough to sacrifice my own way, my own everything.
It is not grievous. It is a delight!

~ Christina

And if it seems evil in your eyes to serve YHVH (The LORD), choose for yourselves this day whom you are going to serve, whether the mighty ones which your fathers served that were beyond the River, or the mighty ones of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell. But I and my house, we serve YHVH (The LORD).” – Joshua 24:15

The Pictorial Meaning of the Aaronic Blessing

The Aaronic blessing

The Aaronic/priestly blessing is fairly well-known.
Most of us have read it in Numbers 6:24-26. And many of us hear it each Shabbat.

Lesser known, however, is the deeper meaning that is found
in the pictorial language of the ancient Hebrew.
Is it necessary to  know and search for “the deeper meaning”? Perhaps not.
But… what beauty it adds to the picture, the message and the character of our Creator!

A few years ago, we had the pleasure of learning from Dr. Suuqiina of Indigenous Messengers International about pictorial meaning found in this blessing through the ancient, pictorial Hebrew. And it was fascinating.

I am not a Hebrew scholar (in fact, I barely know the alef-bet, so far)
but I am excited to share what I did learn during that meeting.
In my excitement, I attempted to create flashcards, of sorts,
to help “paint the picture”.
I know there are variations in the Hebrew language
so please forgive where there are mistakes.
But I hope that the general idea and the beautiful pictures still come through.

I hope that you will find it interesting and fascinating, as I did!
Blessings!

YHVH, the head of the house with His own work strengthens His own hand-
by His work He binds and overpowers the destroyer using the authority in His hand-
YHVH, the Chief Ruler, He secures life and order, His teaching strengthens,
His work secures the hedge of strengthening life-
YHVH’s strong pressing hand lifts up, His work adds living utterance,
He strengthens authority, His hand destroys chaos,
His authority covers destroying the authority attached to chaos.

Beautiful! Baruch HaShem YHVH!

Now hear it…

Shalom!

Everybody Challah! … Our Challah Bread Recipe

Shabbat Shalom challah!

Everybody Challah! Challah Bread

6 cups unbleached flour (or use wheat, or both)
1/3 cup coconut oil, melted
1/3 cup honey (raw, local, or whatever you have)
3 cups of really warm water
2 Tablespoons yeast
1 Tablespoon salt (sea or Himalayan)

In a large bowl, combine the warm water and yeast,
and let it sit for about 5 minutes.
Stir in melted coconut oil, followed by honey. Mix well.
Add 4 cups of flour, stir, and then add salt.
Add the rest of flour (and more, if needed),
until dough clears the sides of the bowl.
Knead for a few minutes (I do all of this in my Bosch mixer).

Put dough in a greased large bowl (grease with olive or coconut oil)
and turn dough until it is greased. Cover with thin cloth and set aside to rise.
(I put mine in the cool oven with the light on).
Rise time will vary – approximately 30 minutes. It should be poofy. 😉

When risen, split dough in half. Put one of the halves on a floured surface
(I just use my kitchen counter) and cut into 6 equal-ish parts.
Roll dough into six strands (a.k.a. “snakes”, according to our girls).

Line them next to each other and braid.  Over two, under one.
(click here for a helpful tutorial video on how to braid a six strand challah)
Brush with egg wash (a beaten egg and a Tablespoon of olive oil), if desired,
to give the bread a shine when baked.

Place on cookie sheet and let rise for about 30 minutes or until risen well.
Bake at 350 for about 20 minutes, until golden brown.

Variations:

For an herb challah, knead a teaspoon of
basil, rosemary, oregano, and thyme into the dough.
Or just before baking, sprinkle a little Himalayan salt and basil on top.

Enjoy! Yum! Yum!
And share with others. 🙂

challahloaves

Sometimes they may not be ‘perfectly’ shaped…
like the above loaves. But that’s okay!

So… What is Challah and why two loaves?

Here’s a portion from wikipedia:
According to Jewish tradition, the three Sabbath meals
(Friday night, Saturday lunch, and Saturday late afternoon)
and two holiday meals (one at night and lunch the following day)
each begin with two complete loaves of bread.
This “double loaf” (in Hebrew: lechem mishneh)
commemorates the manna that fell from the heavens
when the Israelites wandered in the desert
for forty years after the Exodus from Egypt.
The manna did not fall on the Sabbath or holidays;
instead, a double portion would fall the day before the holiday or Sabbath.
It is these hunks of bread, recognizable by their traditional braided style
(although some more modern recipes are not braided)
that are commonly referred to as challah.

Want to know how YHVH commanded His people?
See Exodus 16

Shalom!

Baruch ata YHVH (Adonai, HaShem) Eloheinu Melech ha-olam
ha-motzi lechem min ha-aretz. Amein.

Blessed are You, YHVH, our Elohim, King of the universe,
Who brings forth bread from the earth. Amein.

Reading a Family Treasure

A Little Princess

A Little Princess by Frances Hodgson Burnett
copyright edition 1927
given by my grandmother

I love books.
I love family heirlooms.
I love when the two collide.

When I was 14 years old,
I was given this book –
this exact copy – by my dear gramma.

She knew I loved to read.
She knew I loved antiques.
She knew I had never read this story,
at that time.
And she knew I would love it.

And she was right.
A Little Princess was a favorite
right away!

This week, I pulled this treasure from the bookshelf, took a big whiff (yes, I am a compulsive book sniffer), reminisced of my adventures when reading through it as a teen and then gathered the children to the couch and began reading it aloud (adding it to our homeschool plan). Their attention was soon captured as we joined Sara Crewe (the main character) in her adventure! And I, too, was swept away, once again.

I look forward to reading this aloud with our children in the weeks to come.
What a delight a good, living book is!

When is the last time you opened yourself up to a new adventure?
Or introduced your children to one?

There’s no time like the present.
– Christina

“The children should have the joy of living in far lands, in other persons, in other times — a delightful double existence; and this joy they will find, for the most part, in their story books.”
