Why I Don’t Celebrate Christmas (and still love God)

Yep — I don’t celebrate Christmas.
Yep – I still love and serve my Creator.
It has nothing to do with an aversion to cinnamony smells and sweet treats…
but it has everything to do with Who I worship and what He desires.

Here are some of the reasons why I no longer celebrate Christmas.

Reason #1: Materialism
With the bazillion sales that transpire during the season and the multitudes of shoppers that emerge – too often spending their savings, going beyond their budget, charging up credit cards, putting off paying their bills and even taking out loans -, it’s a no-brainer to see how materialistic the season is (as an overall whole).
(for arguments sake, acknowledgment is made that there is a minority that does not fall into this category).

Reason #2: Gift giving = love
Perhaps that sounds like a ridiculous equation… and it is.
And perhaps not many would admit they believe such an equation (sure, there are some that do not)… But there is a vast tendency to fall into the trap that holds the big lie that says ‘to show someone your thoughtfulness towards them or that you really love and care about them, is to lavishly gift them’. (especially around this season, but not limited to)

Reason #3: The origins of Christmas
This can be a very touchy subject, indeed.
Once upon a time, Christmas was even banned among some Believers.
If one puts forth even a little effort, one can discover where this holiday originated from and what it represents.
In a nutshell, it commemorates sun worship, celebrating the re-birth of the sun and the winter solstice. December 25th is, also, the birthday of Mithras, a pagan god, commemorating a pagan festival, all tied to sun worship. And there is the festival of Saturnalia… and more.
I won’t go into anymore details here as, if one does a simple internet search, one would likely be blown away by the historical facts and truths that have gotten buried regarding this day.

Reason #4: Trees, bulbs, wreaths and the trimmings
This reason really belongs with #3. As one discovers the origins of the day, one discovers the original significance of the traditional trimmings that are included in the celebration of the day. ‘Nuff said.

Reason #5: Jesus is not “the reason for the season”
He just really isn’t. Researching reason #3 will reveal that this ‘season’ existed long before the birth of Jesus and it was a completely different reason to be celebrated. Furthermore, there is no evidence that Jesus was born on December 25th. In fact, there is far more evidence that he was born during the fall/autumn, during one of the Appointed Times/Feast Days of our Creator – The Feast of Tabernacles – which would, also, be a fulfillment of biblical prophecy. If one were to acknowledge/celebrate the birth of Jesus, does not this mentioned time (The Feast of Tabernacles) more appropriately fit the adage of “Jesus is the reason for the season”?

Reason #6: What it means to me doesn’t matter
“That’s not what it means to me”. I hear it often. I used to say it often. But, really… if I love my Creator and have a heart and resolve to serve, honor and obey Him, then “That’s not what it means to me” DOES NOT MATTER.
The only thing that matter is: WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO HIM?
We must evaluate our OWN selves… using Scripture as our standard, not our excuse.
So, with this reason, I only leave the following:

“When יהוה (YHVH- the LORD) your Elohim does cut off from before you the nations which you go to dispossess, and you dispossess them and dwell in their land, guard yourself that you are not ensnared to follow them, after they are destroyed from before you, and that you do not inquire about their mighty ones, saying, ‘How did these nations serve their mighty ones? And let me do so too.’ Do not do so to יהוה (YHVH- the LORD) your Elohim, for every abomination which יהוה hates they have done to their mighty ones, for they even burn their sons and daughters in the fire to their mighty ones.”
Deuteronomy 12:29-31

“And in vain do they worship Me, teaching as teachings the commands of men. Forsaking the command of Elohim (God), you hold fast the tradition of men.”
Mark 7:7-8

I love Him. Enough to obey. Enough to honor. Enough to identify.
Enough to sacrifice my own way, my own everything.
It is not grievous. It is a delight!

May we always seek Truth. And may we be courageous and walk in It.
~ Christina

“And if it seems evil in your eyes to serve יהוה (YHVH- The LORD), choose for yourselves this day whom you are going to serve, whether the mighty ones which your fathers served that were beyond the River, or the mighty ones of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell. But I and my house, we serve יהוה (YHVH- The LORD).”Joshua 24:15

Hanukkah Highlights

Perhaps our Chanukkah this year was not as “eventful” as I would have liked.
And I won’t dwell on that. 😉

But one thing we DID do this year
was attend a local community menorah (channukiah) lighting!

There was music and laughter… smiles and joy.

Wearing our glow-in-the-dark driedel glasses!

Wearing our glow-in-the-dark driedel glasses!

Doughnut decorating and latke eating.

A telling of the story of Chanukkah and encouragement.

The singing of blessings and lighting of the menorah.

The lighting of the chanukkiah

The lighting of the chanukkiah
and the telling of the Chanukkah story

It was such a joy to gather with
the local Jewish community to celebrate the festival!

It was just a glimpse of future days that will come
when our Creator’s people will dwell in unity and rejoice!

May it be in our day!

Happy Chanukkah!

Liquid Gold – Frankincense

essential_oil_bottleLiquid gold? Yes! Frankincense, the King of essential oils, in ancient times, was a very precious commodity and has been used for thousands of years – for religious ceremonies, medicinal purposes, cosmetically and aromatically, and more! Frankincense is a truly unique essential oil, with a rich, aromatic scent that is calming to the senses, emotional state and overall sense of well-being. No wonder it was worth more than gold! It is my favorite essential oil and I use it everyday! It is highly versatile in its uses and benefits! To name a few:

  • building and maintaining a healthy immune system
  • promoting cellular health
  • enhances spiritual connectedness
  • reducing the appearance of scars and stretch marks
  • skin care
  • calming and supports emotional health
  • supports the digestive system
  • supports circulation
  • and so much more!

This fantastic oil is what got me started using essential oils a year ago – when it was offered for FREE! And it’s happening again!! Woo hoo! During the month of December, you can get a FREE bottle of Frankincense (a $93 retail value) with any order of 200PV or more! And I am thrilled to take advantage of it, again! After all, it IS my daily favorite!

10 Marriage Tips

Hubby and I re-creating the infamous statue scene

… Hubby and I re-creating the infamous statue scene

Marriage is not the elusive fairy tale
we find in books and movies.
It is work.
A lifetime of work.
But work isn’t a bad thing. 😉

My husband and I have celebrated
16 years of marriage this year.
My, how time flies.
And there is still plenty to learn.

I read an article by a couple that has been married for 20 years and some of the tips that have kept them going successfully. It is worth sharing. We all have room for growth. And everyone benefits when you work to have a joyous marriage!

1.  Make yourself an easy person to apologize to. When your spouse says, “I’m sorry for being moody” or even “I’m sorry for driving 500 miles in the wrong direction,” do NOT take that as invitation to say anything other than, “Thank you for that apology,” or, if you’re feeling really big, “I forgive you.”

2.  Remember that what you think is the “right” way is simply “the way you’re used to” and may, shockingly, even be “the wrong way.” So keep an open mind. Weird is simply when someone else’s mishugas (craziness) is different from your mishugas.

3.  Never diss your spouse’s family members. It’s wrong and pretty much never worth it.

4.  Don’t keep anything important a secret. Besides the fact that secrets usually leak, this will most definitely build barriers and walls between you and your spouse. Whatever it is, it’s better off shared and dealt with honestly. (Ladies, whether you deem a $200 impulse purchase at Nordstrom Rack “important” or not… is up to you.)

5.  Learn that you will never, ever change your spouse. Unconditional love means loving the faults. Strive to get to the point where you love even your spouse’s faults, because that’s what makes her exactly who she is. Oddly enough, unconditional love often leads to people wanting to become their best selves.

6.  Never prioritize your kids over the marriage. If you haven’t been away without the kids, at least overnight, for longer than you can remember, you are prioritizing the kids over the marriage. Remember that a strong, close, and mutually supportive marriage is the best thing you can do for your kids. Take their therapy money and use it for your vacation. You’re welcome.

7.  There’s nothing wrong if each of you eats something different for dinner. It’s far more important that you eat at the same time, even if one of you has a full-on meal and the other sips tea, even if your kids are making normal conversation, um, elusive. Hang out together over food and drink. (I am aware that kids often make this difficult… see #6.)

8.  Keep a list of things you need to discuss over the week (examples may range from “the washing machine is making weird noises” to “I think our child is bullying others” or even “I’m scared of dying”). Then make regular time, at least half-hour once a week, whether in person or even on the phone, to discuss them. This will prevent throwing upsetting issues out there at the wrong time. And we all know when the wrong time is. Hungry, tired, stressed, you said it.

9.  Find couples who are happy and pump them for info. Be on the lookout wherever you go. Elderly people in long-lasting marriages often have great nuggets to share. Maybe one day, you’ll be one of them.

10.  My favorite: each of you shouldn’t give 50%. Each of you should give 100%. Then you will have not only a marriage, but a loving one. Let no task be beneath you so that your spouse understands that giving is the most important thing to you.

May your marriage be one of growth, joy, peace and love.
Shalom!

A Doctor Appointment I Look Forward To!

theDoctors

There are few things in the entertainment industry that I get downright excited about. Aside from Jane Austen flicks –  Doctor Who is my fandom. Yes, the geeky, sci-fi show my daddy made me watch as a kid (and which I couldn’t stand at the time), has become my all-time favorite show! It quite happened by accident… but it did, indeed, happen.
And I am hooked.

That being said — Over 10 years ago, we removed cable (and all television channels) from our home, so we have been enjoying the seasons of Doctor Who via Netflix.
On Saturday, it was the show’s 50th year anniversary(!) and they aired their very special episode “The Day of the Doctor“!
We did not get to enjoy it with the MILLIONS (yes, millions!) of other viewers that tuned in – – BUT, that’s okay… because tonight we are heading to our local theater to watch it in 3D!! Woot! We’ve been awaiting this day for a long time! And we’re ready to dress in our geek garb and attend our Doctor appointment tonight!!!
*insert school girl giggle squeal*

DoctorAppointment

The ONLY Doctor appointment that makes me smile!

UPDATE:

The Day of the Doctor in 3D theaters was fantastically epic!!

Dressed in our geek garb

Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark

darkness_layoutsparksdotcom

Do you know the legend
of the Cherokee Indian youth’s
rite of passage?

His dad takes him into the forest, blindfolds,
and leaves him alone.
He is required to sit on a stump the whole night
and not take off the blindfold
until the rays of the sun shine through it.
He is all by himself.
He cannot cry out for help to anyone.
Once he survives the night, he is a MAN.
He cannot tell the other boys of this experience.
Each lad must come into his own manhood.
The boy was terrified and could hear all kinds of noises.
Beasts were all around him.
Maybe even some human would hurt him.
The wind blew the grass and earth, and it shook his stump.
But he sat stoically, never removing the blindfold.
It was the only way he could become a man.
Finally, after a horrific night, the sun appeared
and he removed his Blindfold.
It was then that he saw his father sitting
on the stump next to him, at watch the entire night.

Dark times come.
Hard times…
times of questioning and struggling…
times of uncertainty and discouragement…
times when we feel we are spinning in circles…
or walking aimlessly in the dark trying to find our way…
times we feel lost and alone…

But we’re not alone.
And would it surprise you to hear that these are some of the most blessed moments?

It is a time of searching, examining, learning…
A time of purging, refining, polishing…
A time of changing, practicing, trusting…
A time that will guide you toward His intentions for you.

We are never alone. Even when we do not realize it,
our Father is protecting us. He is sitting on the stump beside us.
All we have to do is reach out to Him.

“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous.
Do not be afraid, nor be discouraged,
for יהוה your Elohim is with you wherever you go.” – Joshua 1:9

Why I Keep the Seventh Day Sabbath

Sabbath Peace

Yep —   I keep the seventh day Sabbath.
It has nothing to do with denomination –
it has everything to do with Who I worship and what He desires.

Here are the reasons why I keep – guard and observe – the 7th day Sabbath.

Reason #1: My Creator did

“Thus the heavens and the earth were completed, and all their array. And on the seventh day Elohim completed His work which He had done, and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had made. And Elohim blessed the seventh day and set it apart, because on it He rested from all His work which Elohim in creating had made.” – Genesis 2:1-3

Our Father, our Creator, set the pattern, the example, the principle for us.
A time to cease from work, a time to review, acknowledge, celebrate the beauty of the creation that He pronounced “good”. It belongs to Him from the very beginning.
The 7th day Sabbath honors, remembers, Elohim {God}, YHVH, as our Creator.
He blessed the 7th day and declared it holy, set apart to Himself.
The Sabbath distinguishes YHVH from false gods.
It identifies WHO we worship…
The Creator, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

Reason #2: It was reaffirmed in the Ten Commandments

Remember the Sabbath day, to set it apart.
Six days you labour, and shall do all your work,
but the seventh day is a Sabbath of {YHVH} יהוה your Elohim.
You do not do any work – you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger who is within your gates.
For in six days יהוה made the heavens and the earth, the sea,
and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day.
Therefore {YHVH} יהוה blessed the Sabbath day and set it apart.” – Exodus 20:8-11 (Deuteronomy. 5:12, too)

The 7th day is the sabbath of YHVH, not the Jews… but of YHVH.
The cattle were not Jewish, neither were the strangers,
yet, He commands them all to remember the Sabbath.

Guard the Sabbath day, to set it apart, as {YHVH} יהוה your Elohim commanded you. Six days you labour, and shall do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath of יהוה your Elohim.
You do not do any work – you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your ox, nor your donkey, nor any of your cattle, nor your stranger who is within your gates, so that your male servant and your female servant rest as you do. And you shall remember that you were a slave in the land of Mitsrayim {Egypt}, and that יהוה your Elohim brought you out from there by a strong hand and by an outstretched arm. Therefore יהוה your Elohim commanded you to observe the Sabbath day. ” – Deuteronomy 5:12-15

The Sabbath reminds of the Exodus from Egypt,
which is an example and picture of His salvation.

Reason #3: Blessed
“Jew”, “NON-Jew”, stranger alike… is blessed in keeping this command.

Thus said {YHVH} יהוה, “Guard right-ruling, and do righteousness, for near is My deliverance to come, and My righteousness to be revealed. Blessed is the man who does this, and the son of man who lays hold on it, guarding the Sabbath lest he profane it, and guarding his hand from doing any evil…
… Also the sons of the foreigner who join themselves to {YHVH} יהוה, to serve Him, and to love the Name of {YHVH} יהוה, to be His servants, all who guard the Sabbath, and not profane it, and hold fast to My covenant” – Isaiah 56:1-2, 6

If you do turn back your foot from the Sabbath, from doing your pleasure on My set-apart day, and shall call the Sabbath ‘a delight,’ the set-apart day of {YHVH} יהוה ‘esteemed,’ and shall esteem it, not doing your own ways, nor finding your own pleasure, nor speaking your own words, then you shall delight yourself in {YHVH} יהוה. And I shall cause you to ride on the heights of the earth, and feed you with the inheritance of Yaʽaqoḇ your father. For the mouth of {YHVH} יהוה has spoken!”                 – Isaiah 58:13-14

It’s supposed to be a delight. It is His set apart day… esteemed/honored.

Reason #4: It will be observed in the time to come

For as the new heavens and the new earth that I make stand before Me, declares {YHVH} יהוה, so your seed and your name shall stand. And it shall be that from New Moon to New Moon,
and from Sabbath to Sabbath, all flesh shall come to worship before Me, declares {YHVH} יהוה. ” – Isaiah 66:22-23

Sabbath observance in the new heaven and earth…
… in the beginning… and in the end… what happened to in between?

Reason #5: It is a sign between Him and His people

I am {YHVH} יהוה your Elohim. Walk in My laws, and guard My right-rulings, and do them. And set apart My Sabbaths, and they shall be a sign between Me and you, to know that I am יהוה your Elohim.” – Ezekiel 20:19-20

It is HIS Sabbath, not any particular people’s.
It is a sign between Him and His people, that they/we will know HE is our God.
He ordained it, blessed it, set it apart, set the pattern for it,
commanded it, reminded of it, called it His, and blesses those that keep it.

————————————————–

For those who are believers in His Son? He came to do the Father’s will…

{Yeshua} יהושע said to them, “My food is to do the desire {will} of Him who sent Me, and to accomplish His work.” ~ John 4:34

Reason #6: The Son – The Messiah – kept the Sabbath.

“And He came to Natsareth {Nazareth}, where He had been brought up. And according to His practice, He went into the congregation on the Sabbath day, and stood up to read.”
– Luke 4:16

And they went into Kephar Naḥum {Capernaum}, and immediately on the Sabbath He went into the congregation and taught.” – Mark 1:21

And Sabbath having come, He began to teach in the congregation.” – Mark 6:2a

Not only did He keep the Sabbath but He is Master of the Sabbath…

And He said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath. So the Son of Aḏam is also Master of the Sabbath.” – Mark 2:27-28

He was our example…walk as He walked…

The one who says he stays in Him ought himself also to walk, even as He walked.” – 1 John 2:6

——————————————–
And what of his disciples, apostles?
They observed it…

Reason #7: His disciples observed it

But passing through from Perge, they came to Antioch in Pisidia,
and went into the congregation on the Sabbath day and sat down.” – Acts 13:14

And when the Yehuḏim {Jews} went out of the congregation,
the gentiles begged to have these words spoken to them the next Sabbath … And on the next Sabbath almost all the city
came together to hear the Word of Elohim.” – Acts 13:42,44

And on the Sabbath day we went outside the city by a river, where there used to be prayer.” – Acts 16:13a

And according to his practice, Sha’ul {Paul}went in unto them,
and for three Sabbaths was reasoning with them from the Scriptures” – Acts 17:2

And he was reasoning in the congregation every Sabbath,
and won over both Yehuḏim and Greeks.”  – Acts 18:4

————————————————

Yeshua {the Messiah} said…

Do not think that I came to destroy the Torah or the Prophets.
I did not come to destroy but to complete. For truly, I say to you, till the heaven and the earth pass away, one jot or one tittle shall by no means pass from the Torah till all be done.
Whoever, then, breaks one of the least of these commands,
and teaches men so, shall be called least in the reign of the heavens; but whoever does and teaches them, he shall be called great in the reign of the heavens.” – Matthew 5:17-19

John tells us…

By this we know that we love the children of Elohim,
when we love Elohim and guard His commands.
For this is the love for Elohim, that we guard His commands,
and His commands are not heavy” – 1 John 5:2-3

I love Him.
Enough to obey.
Enough to observe.
Enough to honor.
Enough to identify.
It is not grievous.

It is a delight!

Daily Workout

daily workout

Wine bag I found at a local store!

Once upon a time,
I had never even tasted wine.

And once upon a time,
I believed it sin to do so.

Then once upon a time,
my eyes were opened and my paradigm shifted away from the doctrine of men that wine/alcohol was ‘bad’.

And now, once upon a week
(or more or less),
I freely and gladly enjoy
the fruit of the vine.

I’m not advocating alcoholism, nor am I promoting a glass of wine
with every meal (to each his own).
Know your own self and make wise and profitable choices
for the good of those in your life.
However, do not remain oppressed by doctrines, traditions and theologies of men.

Yes, yes, the Truth will make you free. So seek the Truth. Be set free.
And daily workout your liberty.

Defy Them

defylimitations

There are times when defiance is necessary.

Far too long I allowed my past, my fears, my flaws… the traditions, theology and paradigms of others… to establish limitations (spoken and unspoken) in my life.

I am choosing to break free. To run to Truth. To allow my own paradigm to shift. To no longer live in fear and oppression – imposed upon myself or others.

I choose freedom. I choose to know, love and become me.

Know your limitations… and defy them.
